Defensive Coordinator

Coach Johnson was part of Coach Rollinson’s staff from 1989 – 1998 and during that time he served as the Mater Dei Defensive Coordinator from 1991 – 1998. Coach Johnson was named the Head Football Coach at Fountain Valley High School where he served from 1999 – 2004. Eric was the Defensive Coordinator at Goldenwest College (2005 – 2007) and Corona Del Mar High School (2007 – 2009). During his tenure as Defensive Coordinator at Mater Dei, the Monarchs have a winning percentage of 86%, and have won five (5) National Championships.

Coach Johnson graduated from Washington State University with a degree in Social Science. He was a three year starter for the Cougars at Free Safety and was a teammate with current Mater Dei assistant, John Hopkins. Eric earned All-Pac 8 First team honors in his senior year at WSU. Upon graduation from WSU Eric played for the Philadelphia Eagles, San Francisco 49ers (NFL), Southern California Sun (WFL), New Jersey Generals, and New Orleans Breakers (USFL). Eric has also appeared in the feature films Semi-Tough, North Dallas Forty, and Best of Times.

Eric has four adult children, 2 grandsons, and 4 granddaughters. He lives with his wife Karen in Santa Ana.
