Varsity Head Coach - Matty West


Varsity Assistant - Raul Avellaneda

Coach Raul is originally from El Cerro, Montevideo, Uruguay . He moved to Mexico in the 60's where his father (Raul Sr) continued his soccer carrier and later the United States in the 70's. Raul has been with MD since 2005/2006 season. He had the opportunity to be a part of the CIF Championship in 2007. Raul has coached at both the Frosh/Soph and JV level and is currently an assistant coach on the Varsity team.

Raul played both center forward and wing. He played for both Beverly Hills Soccer Club/Mar Vista Soccer Club as a youth. In college he played two years at Cerritos College and then went abroad Uruguay/Liverpool, Costa Rica/Guanacaste, Mexico/Cobras. 

Currently Raul has coached at Newport Mesa Soccer Club since 2012/2013 season. He coaches both GU16 and GU17 teams. As a coach he was at FC Irvine since 2006 coaching GU15- GU19 teams.  He also won State Cup - Presidents Division with BU19 in 2010.  Coach Raul has also been an assistant coach at Cerritos College as an since 2005.  At Cerritos College he won state championship's in 2006 and 2008 finishing both times as the #2 ranked team in the nation and making at least quarter final's in 2007, 2009-2013.

Junior Varsity - Lawrance Marin

Coach Lawrance was born and raised in Trinidad. He moved to New Jersey where he attended middle school and high school.  He went to college at West Chester University in Pennsylvania.   Coach Lawrance played club and ODP in New Jersey.  He also played Division II at West Chester University.  Lawrance has coached at Katella High School with the Varsity team for 4 years, Santa Ana College for the past 3 years; club soccer for Canyon and Corinthians for 4 years.  This is Coach Lawrance’s third year at Mater Dei. 

Lawrance feels that coaching isn’t about winning and losing but about helping to mold better athletes and more importantly better people.  His favorite quote is:  "Be more concerned with your character than your reputation, because your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are."  John Wooden

Frosh/Soph White - Fernando Moreno

Fernando has been coaching soccer for over 20 years.  He likes to emphasize the technical, tactical, physical and psychological components of soccer.  Strength in each of these four pillars of soccer make a player complete.  His coaching focus is on ball possession and making good tactical decisions.  Coach Fernando brings a positive attitude to training and inspires his players to reach their highest potential.
