About

Jonathon “Johnny” Rodriguez joined Mater Dei as Head Lacrosse Coach in August of 2015. Johnny grew up in Annapolis, Maryland and attended Mount St. Joseph High School, an all boys catholic high school in Baltimore, Maryland. After graduating from high school, Johnny continued his education and sports career at Salisbury University where he lettered in lacrosse and ice hockey. Before graduating with a double major in Business Management and Marketing with a minor in athletic coaching, he was also a 3x All-American and D3 Goalie of the Year in 2011, the same year he lead his team to their program’s 10th National Championship. In September of 2023, he was inducted into the Salisbury University Hall of Fame.

 

After graduating, Johnny continued his playing career playing professional lacrosse for 7 years before decided he wanted to fully commit himself to his athlete's and his coaching career. After joining Mater Dei in 2015, he resurrected a struggling programing on the foundation of instilling character in his athletes, within 5 years the program had reached national recognition being named in the Top 25 National Rankings during the 2022 and 2023 season. 

 

Johnny is a devoted catholic, a husband and a father. In August of 2023 he stepped down in his 9th year as a head coach to put a more holistic focus into the program’s future success, and is currently an assistant on the Boys Lacrosse coaching staff.

From the moment, I walked on campus for my interview at Mater Dei, I was inspired by the love and pride this community shared for each other, the grit that I felt walking through the hallways and the tradition of excellence this school had upheld through its history.
