The Heisman Memorial Trophy Award is awarded annually to the most outstanding player in college football whose performance best exhibits the pursuit of excellence with integrity. Winners epitomize great ability combined with diligence, perseverance, and hard work. To date, Mater Dei is the ONLY high school that has THREE alumni who have received this honor.  In May 2022, Mater Dei welcomed John Huarte ’61, Matt Leinart ’01, and Bryce Young ’20 home to campus to celebrate Heisman Homecoming:

John Huarte (Mater Dei Class of 1961) won the award in 1964 after an All-American career at Notre Dame.

Matt Leinart (Mater Dei Class of 2001) won the award in 2004 after completing a record-setting career at USC.

Bryce Young (Mater Dei Class of 2020) won the award in 2021 after leading his team at Alabama with a record-setting season. Bryce threw for 4,872 yards and 47 touchdowns.
