Mater Dei Girls Basketball sprints past Windward late to win 1st Open Division Championship in School history!

Alyssa Durazo-Frescas and Brooke Demetre are named to All County Girls Basketball FIRST TEAM.  Meaali'i Amosa and Caia Elisaldez named 2nd team All County.

 

Mater Dei All Country Forward Meaali'i Amosa commits to the University of Pepperdine to continue her basketball and educational career.

Congratulations to former Mater Dei Girls Basketball Alum Katie Lou Samuelson on being Drafted #4 in the 2019 WNBA Draft to the Chicago Sky!!  GO SKY GO!!!

 

Congratulations to Sophomore Guard Brooke Demetre on being named California Girls Basketball Sophomore of the year.  She joins former Monarchs Katie Lou Samuelson and Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis as the only Mater Dei players to win the award.

Congratulations to Junior Guard Cailyn Crocker on being selected OC Varsity Player of the week for February 26th - March 2nd.  

 

Congratulations to Senior Forward Emma Torbert on being selected OC Varsity Player of the week for January 29th - February 2nd.

 

Emma Torbert develops into a calming inside presence for Mater Dei Girls Basketball.

 

Mater Dei uses a late surge to beat Ribet Academy 60-56 in the 1st round of the CIF Open Division Playoffs.  The Monarchs were down by 10 points to start the 4th quarter.

 

Mater Dei's inspired 2nd half is enough to enough to beat Orangewood Academy 63-38 at the Tony Matson Classic at Orange Lutheran.

 

#1 Mater Dei blows past #2 Brea Olinda 71-47, led by freshmen DYNAMIC DUO Khylee Pepe and Brooke Demetre.

 

#1 Mater Dei tunes up for basketball showdown by beating #3 Rosary Academy 55-35, led by Freshmen Khylee Pepe and Alyssa Frescas.

 

2016-17 Season/Year

Mater Dei Girls Basketball Advances to Division II State Title Game with a big win over Orangewood Academy.

 

Congratulations to Katie Lou Samuelson for being named to 1st Team All-American by ESPNW and she was also named 1st Team All-American by the WBCA.

 

Congratulations to Katie Lou Samuelson for being named American Athletic Conference Co-Player of the year with teammate Naphessa Collier.  Katie Lou was also named American Athletic Conference Tournament MVP by hitting a NCAA RECORD 10 out of 10 from 3-pt land.

 

Congratulations to Karlie Samuelson for being named 1st Team All Pac 12.

Congratulations to both Karlie and Katie Lou Samuelson for helping their teams have a great and successful run in this years NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament.  Both UConn and Stanford made the FINAL FOUR.

2015-16 Season/Year

 

Congratulations to Katie Lou Samuelson (class of '15) and the UConn Huskies on winning their historic 4th straight national championship. "Lou" continued the Santa Ana, Ca. to Storrs, Connecticut pipeline following in the footsteps of former Monarch Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis (class of '11) making it an impressive 4 national titles won by former Monarchs at UConn. Unfortunately, Katie Lou broke a bone in her foot in the national semi final win over Oregon State and was unable to play in the championship game. Nonetheless, Katie Lou had a tremendous freshman year starting most of the season and playing a very pivotal role all year long en route to a historic run by the Huskies. Great job Lou and we at MD are all very proud of you!

 

This years Women's NCAA tournament has been a great success for the Samuelson sisters (Karlie & Katie Lou). Both sisters are starters and key contributors for their respective squads. Karlie (class of '13) and her Stanford teammates made a great run to the elite 8 beating heavily favored Notre Dame in the sweet 16 before losing a tough game to Washington. Still it was a fantastic run for a team that was not expected to advance very far this year. Meanwhile Katie Lou (class of '15) and her UConn teammates continued to roll on making this weekends Women's Final 4 extending their amazing win streak to 73 with a dominant win over Texas as they seek their historic and unprecedented fourth consecutive national championship. Good luck Lou and congratulations to Karlie on an excellent season.

 

Katie Lou Samuelson is coming into her own and many feel she is on her way to becoming UConn's next great player.

Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis is drafted #3 overall in the 2015 WNBA draft by the Seattle Storm. Again congratulations KML!

With UConn's 63-53 victory over Notre Dame to win the women's basketball national championship, former monarch Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis wraps us her UConn career with 4 trips to the final 4 and 3 straight national titles! We are so proud of you Kaleena and we wish you the best moving forward, hold the trophy high!

 

Katie Lou Samuelson will be participating in the McDonald's all American girls game this week. Best of luck Lou!

 

Congratulations to Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis for breaking the all time 3 pointers made record in NCAA women's college basketball history! She broke the record in UConn's 91-70 elite eight victory over Dayton and helped pave the way for her 4th trip to the women's final 4 in her four years as a Husky. Congratulations on your fabulous college career Kaleena and best wishes in Tampa as you and the Huskies go for 3 straight titles!
